The General Store at Smith Mountain Lake started as the dream of two friends, Vicki and Rita, who wanted to create a gathering place for the community to find unique, fair-priced gifts, where you are always greeted with a smile and a hug.
Vicki and her family moved to Franklin County in 1999, and after many years of volunteering and substitute teaching at her children's schools, Vicki wanted to pursue her dream of opening a shop.
Rita had been working in the local school system but had to return to Maryland to help her mom care for her father, who was facing a long recovery after an aortic aneurysm. Once Rita returned to Franklin County, she needed to keep her mind and body busy after this difficult time.
Vicki and Rita got together and brainstormed, and their dream became a reality.
The General Store at Smith Mountain Lake opened in a small retail storefront on May 9, 2003. Two years later, the pair found an older brick home with over 3,600 square feet to display and sell their general store goods.
Vicki and Rita have relied on their strong faith to guide their way and continue to pray for guidance in making decisions for the store and the community.
Vicki and Rita credit their families for much of their success. Vicki's husband Skeeter and two children, Megan and Justin have been involved every step of the way. Rita's husband Mike and children Nicole and Jonathan are always ready to lend a helping hand. And granddaughter Gianna is learning the ropes and the value of good customer service.
The General Store at Smith Mountain Lake has been blessed to have extended family volunteer to work in the store and have hired nieces and nephews to help our extraordinary General Store staff. Many of our General Store family who provide award winning customer service have been with us for ten years or more.
This year Vicki and Rita decided to add an online store to their website, so visitors and locals can shop their favorite General Store goods all year long.
They hope you enjoy the website and visit the General Store when you are in the area.
